Coolness is not inspiring

This is an entry from my real journal of some of the debriefing thoughts I've had since returning from NYC:

A most uninspiring goal in life is the acheivement of coolness and beauty. Neither ever satisfy and both have no intrinsic meaningfulness. Of course, they are not necessarily meaningless. I will always love cool and I will always be captivated by beauty, but the more I remind my mind of people like Hollee Brock, who devote their lives to service and kindness at the sacrifice of prestige and fashion and (empty) materialism, the more my heart is compelled. What's the point of intimidating someone compared with the value of serving them?

Note to self: read this entry everyday.

My negativity towards coolness doesn't mean I wouldn't love to live in NY, but I'd want to do it the Tim Keller way: go to the city to serve rather than to promote one's own prestige.

hmmmm....that's very true that service is intrinsically meaningless also. i'm trying to figure out how to follow my aesthetic calling, serve my Caller, and make money. i need to find a brilliant balance. that's what i'm looking for. i'm slightly confused.
i like your thoughts, john.

Yeah, I'm surrounded by "coolness" here to. I've been reading Ecclesiastes these days and the idea of meanlessness is something I've been chewing on lately. He said everything is meaningless as an end in itself- even service. It makes me think of what it means to do one's job versus to follow one's calling and then what it means to follow one's calling versus to following the Caller.
