i want to be a rollerskating princess

(picture taken from femmetopia's flickr site)
Tomorow's my birfday and I'm going rollerskating with my friends! I got back into it when I was in China at this totally cool outdoor rollerskating rink. I learned a couple tricks there from Chinese rollerskaters who skated better than anything I could imagine. I thought I'd take up the more modern inline skating when I got back to the states, but rollerskating is so forgotten and old school. I'm going to keep skating with my quad skates.

that's not me.

i love shows!

Went to Baltimore, Maryland with my brother last night to see a show at the Ottobar. The main act was the Danielson family, a very creative group of siblings who do really cool performance art. Here they are wearing their matching nurse uniforms all handmade by the red-haired girl.

Yo, guess what? There was a photo booth machine in the venue and so of course, Lowen and I had to get a strip. Daniel, the lead singer of the band, was selling his t-shirts and cds because one of the opening bands was playing, so I asked him if he could give us a second and get in the photo booth with us. Yo, we got the shots. I'll scan the photobooth and post it tomorrow!
Danielson Family's music is a bit squeely and raucous for me to listen to it alone, but as an act they're very entertaining.
But loved the opening band better. They were called Page France. They had a very sing-along-song, friendly sound.....but with this perfect blend of body or soul or something. Anyway, their presence and their sound sucked me in.
Here they are. She was a sweet one.

p.s. The weirdest part of the night: My entire toenail on my big toe fell off. It's gone. Not because I was being rowdy. I was standing still. But all that rollerskating in China had damaged it and it finally decided to come off last night. Didn't hurt a single bit. I won't post pics. haha.

Nurturing
"To be a photographer you have to nurture the things that most people discard."
-Richard Avedon

Watched a documentary on Richard Avedon tonight. That's him above. He was a fashion and portrait photographer of the 20th century. He photographed alot for the New Yorker and Vogue. Died last year. I've always adored his stuff.
One of my favorite pieces of his below.

howard family reunited

We all colored our shirts together. It's called tie-dying.
That's only half of us there.
My dear students,
Just got back from a big family reunion in the Shenendoah mountains of Virginia. We went canoeing (a kind of small boat) as a family, tie-dyed tshirts (this is when you tie rubber bands around clothing and then dip them in colors to stain them), cooked dinner for eachother every night, and just chilled. There was also a fair share of arguing, as their tends to be when my family of extreme personalities gets together. But I'm grateful in my bones that I have them. They're always consistent in my life. They always love me.
That's what we need. Consistent love.

my day in the flowers

My new job is better than one I could have dreamed of. I assist this woman Linda in baby photo shoots for popular American children's magazines, and go on other adventures with her, like to her friend's house where I saw this cool sign on the porch, or to a field of sunflowers where she feels compelled to make some art. She's an artist more than she is a commercial photographer but her art is enabled by her commercial success, if ya know what I mean. I'm getting paid to be who I am! It's great!

homecoming
Uploading pictures to my blog hasn't worked for the past week. I've had technical difficulties. So here's a shot from the surprise party my family and dear friends threw for me to welcome me back. I was pleasantly surprised indeed. I got three gifts; a giant zucchini, an alarm clock set to China time (which happens to be exactly 12 hours difference, so it's kinda funny), and this picture of my dad in highschool. I love the frame. I love the field. Look closely. His little sister, my aunt Pamela, gave it to me.
Sheesh. I could post the picture of the Hello Kitty cap but now it's not letting me post pictures again. I'll go fetch some technical assistance.

helly kitty cap

Sooooooooo....
I was searching for pictures of the girls in Fellini's film '8 1/2' and I typed those words into the google image search. One picture came up. I looked closer. I saw Hello Kitty. Can you beleive this? How stinking ridiculous....I love it.

hometown life

me and my sista'!

Here I am playing basketball in my backyard. (I don't really play. I just did it for the picture because I'm a dork.)
Dearest Students,
I took some pictures today that I wouldn't ordinarily take. But I took them for you because I know you will love to see my house and my hometown.
I've been home for just a week but I already have an interesting job. I am working for a photographer named Linda Farwell. You can see her pictures at www.lindafarwellphotography.com. She photographs for some major American baby magazines and she is training me to be her assistant. She lives in a town near mine...just 20 minutes away by car. I love working for her. I help her on photo shoots. I help her to set up the lighting and make the babies laugh and I do any extra work she needs me to do. She likes me a lot and she pays me well and even bought me a fun toy camera today! We laugh a lot and I like her life. I am so grateful to be working for her.
I am also preparing lots of healthy food for myself and my family. Soon I will post some pictures of the food I love, because I know you are so interested in what Americans eat. I will show you what I eat. ;-) Probably I will be living at home for the next year, feeding my sick father healthy food and learning how to be an assistant from this photographer friend of mine. I am happy to be home, but my heart is a little confused and sad because China is so far now.

The road in front of my house. Aren't the trees pretty?

It takes about 3 minutes to walk to this beach. It is right near my house. We like to swim here in the summertime!

Sienna at our beach.
It takes too long to upload them here. Click http://www.flickr.com/photos/70256009@N00/ to see more.

my house (wode su-she)

Dear Students,
Can you read my pin-ying above? Wish I could write in characters.
This is the place where I live with my 8 family members! Yesterday evening was rainy and beautiful. I sat outside on the porch with my mom and dad and brother. I asked my dad to take this picture of me and Lowen so you could see my house. More pictures to come, and I'll tell you about my new job soon too.

the arrival gate

Here are some shots from the airport reunion with my parents and Sienna. The 3 of them were there to pick me up at midnight last Friday. It was very special. I did NOT expect the whole family...we don't even all fit in the van and I understand the need to sleep at night. But I had a special gift for the sibling who chose to come!!

secrets

Check out this very cool website all about an art project based on people's secrets.
While visiting Laura Witty last week we went to Urban Outfitters and I found this very cool book filled with anonymous postcards with people's secret's written on them. I beleive in this project: the originality of the idea and the health of admitting something shameful or beautiful.
Check it out.
