a cute weekend
Chalice's dance class got matching warm-ups. Is she adorable, or is she adorable? My mom too....

Todd came to visit the Howard house on his recruitement circuit for Covenant. We went to Pax's football game, ate together, and watched Crimes and Misdemeanors. A good time was had by all. As you can see in Pax's expression.

Coolness is not inspiring
This is an entry from my real journal of some of the debriefing thoughts I've had since returning from NYC:
A most uninspiring goal in life is the acheivement of coolness and beauty. Neither ever satisfy and both have no intrinsic meaningfulness. Of course, they are not necessarily meaningless. I will always love cool and I will always be captivated by beauty, but the more I remind my mind of people like Hollee Brock, who devote their lives to service and kindness at the sacrifice of prestige and fashion and (empty) materialism, the more my heart is compelled. What's the point of intimidating someone compared with the value of serving them?
Note to self: read this entry everyday.
My negativity towards coolness doesn't mean I wouldn't love to live in NY, but I'd want to do it the Tim Keller way: go to the city to serve rather than to promote one's own prestige.

Cambridge life
Last night in the Howard home...

Luke stopped by for a visit on his drive up to Philly from Chattanooga. He got in last night late and just left this morning at 10. We walked around pretty Cambridge for about an hour this morning with Jember...

Jember is a funny dog.

photo essay of nyc
Here's a little photo essay of my time here so far. It's been a sort of dream come true and horrible nightmare mixed into one! There's so much wonderful aesthetic stimuli and i've had a lot of fun with friends, but there's so much superficial value of coolness and success. yuck.
Eating dinner with Liz, Meredith, and their hosts, Adam Porcello's friends, at their apt in Manhattan.
I made this shirt for my student Zoe, who lives in Queens in NYC now!
ahhh. The set.
Half of the sign to a beautiful, funky litte rice pudding cafe. I went there back in the Bowery day with Charlotte and Kerry and Emily! It's called Rice to Riches. Half of the sign aptly expresses nYC.
Zoe and I in the Redeemer Pres bathroom. Look at her coat. Isn't it a perfect thing?
Fahion in the subway. So fun to look at. I adore this girl.
True dat.
3 days left...

I'm going to the city!

In 20 minutes I'm leaving for New York City. I'll be staying for the week working on a photo shoot with my boss, Linda. We're shooting a magazine for Wal-Mart called, "Baby and You." Just because I won't enter a Wal-Mart doesn't mean I can't photograph their baby magazine!
Commercial photography kind of sucks, but I'm incredibly excited for this opportunity.
I also get to hear Tim Keller preach at Redeemer Pres in the city today, I get to see my immigrant Chinese student Zoe, and tomorrow I'll chill out with Covenant friends on Monday. They're on their fall break....so serendipitous.
The shoot starts Tuesday.
On my list of things to see and do in the city: (any suggestions?)
mOmA
Apple store in soho!
see Chelsea, Greenwich village, and the East Village
get my eyes done at Sephora
take photos with my holga.

So You Think You Can Dance

Here we are in matching shirts that say 'I heart Travis' custom designed by Chalice.
Last night I shamelessly attended the So You Think You Can Dance tv show performance tour in D.C. My sister Chalice, her friends, my dad, and I got to watch some of the kitschiest, most entertaining, sensational little dancers on stage for 2 hours! I love watching people dance and this performance was quite aesthetically engaging....though I think it was designed for our a.d.d. culture. Each dance routine lasted about 40 seconds. Natalie actually did a dance to Hyperballad by Bjork, but we only got to hear a tiny part of that beautiful song. My favorites were a hip hop routine with Benji and Donyelle and the group dance to 'Bringing Sexy Back' (by Justin Timberlake). They were all dressed in hot black outfits for that number. It was quite a booty shaking fun time...

Long live kitschy tv shows and gawdy dance performances!! I love it!
